Just as a cloud can be seen and contemplated in the sky, anger, anxiety or any other state of mind can be seen in consciousness as something separate from the real us, in the sense that it is a movement in consciousness, something that pops up in it. Our unconscious-learned reaction to it is what adds pain and aversion to the experience and as a mechanical response of fear, identifies us with that state of mind, thus the illusion is created. Our experience then is to be the anger, the fear, the anxiety and not the distant observer that is watching it pass by in our field of awareness. Intellectually, we know that by looking at the the sky and to the clouds we are not the cloud but an observer of it. The illusion is so deeply habitual that we think that those painful experiences are us and forget that it is impossible to lose our true Self - the One who watches and is aware. This is not to be grasped intellectually because the same mind who creates the illusion is the one that tries to rationalise it and a spiral of thought and confusion is created.
This thinking mind cannot bring us peace and the experience of simply observing the movements of consciousness cannot be forced by it. Spontaneous experiences of peace, where we can shift to this observing state of consciousness, might arise when something provokes this inner silence, such as gazing at the beauties of nature, a song or piece of art, looking in the eyes of our loved one, etc. The moment we bring our thinking habitual mind to that moment we snap out of it and can only wonder how beautiful it was. Cultivating moment to moment concentration is the path that brings us the real us - the presence, the watcher - to the foreground. This peace and everlasting contentment is always within us and seeking it outside is a trap. After all our true essence is pure contentment itself and unconditional acceptance to what is.
The pleasure we are all seeking is what we truly are.
